The challenge

Looking for high performance, even with best practices

Site speed for Perelel had always been a point of emphasis internally, but while they focused on doing all the right best practices like image compression and running a clean theme from 3rd Party apps and scripts, their site was far from slow, but still missing that extra gear.

Having previously tested another solution on the market, but not seeing the results or experience, Alex was recommended to Edgemesh by her developer originally to find another set of optimization that is not possible through development work alone. Perelel also heavily relies on their quiz as a subscription based supplement brand, which guides users through a set of questions to identify the right set of supplements for the customer.

Their conversion rate for users who begin their journey through the quiz is more than 2x higher than the store average, but the quiz can sometimes load slowly, causing a drop off in users before completion. In addition to overall site speed improvements, optimizing the quiz experience and confirming an edge caching solution would not break the quiz as she had heard before was a top priority.

The solution

Alex came to Edgemesh to understand what could be done to improve the site speed and the quiz experience without losing any functionality or re-engineering the site. Everything they do at Perelel, especially with paid vendors, is centered around getting tangible ROI quickly. Alex felt they were in a strong position, both in performance and business metrics already, but wanted to prove or disprove her theory before making any serious decisions.

Edgemesh supports commitment-free PoC periods to test the product, and see the results, so Alex would feel confident in any investment required. Edgemesh onboarded their Server Performance product for Perelel within days of confirming a PoC partnership, and even supported the launch of a theme update, live together, at midnight Pacific Standard Time.

One of the biggest pain points was confirming their quiz and subscription 3rd parties would not be impacted with the new optimizations and caching functionality. Edgemesh sets up test sites for every new customer to confirm everything works as expected before ever hitting the launch button.

The Perelel team was happy to confirm these changes along with Edgemesh would not affect their core offerings, and that they had the flexibility to include or exclude pieces of the website from Edgemesh at any point with a simple tag in the theme.

Speed impacts can be felt almost immediately with Edgemesh when enabled, so it was not a surprise to see the real user metrics for core web vitals take a big dip shortly after launch. Below are some highlights for the Core Web Vital changes of Perelel’s site before and after launch of Edgemesh:

Alex and the team are no strangers to testing and optimizing, so when it came to evaluating Edgemesh, the speed was a part of the equation, and the promise of downstream business improvement in conversion rate lift was the other. Normally, they see anywhere from a 5-20% lift for small changes to a single page or element when testing, so they were expecting to see something similar.

Edgemesh set-up a 50-50 split traffic test for Perelel with 50% receiving the control of zero optimizations, and 50% receiving the Edgemesh accelerated experience with all optimizations and caching enabled. In order to measure the results Perelel used Edgmesh Insights to capture all web data and orders directly in the edge network, so there was no sampling, no data loss, and no data matching across platforms to make sense of it all.

With a 20% lift in Conversion rate it became quickly apparent that the speed increases were playing a role in the improved business metrics.

With the confidence from the first split, Alex opted to change it to a 80/20 split, with 80% receiving the Edgemesh accelerated experience, to confirm that even with a near full acceleration of the site, that the better experience would hold similar results.

After another period of 80/20 split, the improvement held well, with the 80% showing an increase of 14% in both Conversion Rate as well as Net ARPU (Gross Revenue - (Tax+Shipping+Discounts)).
